Measuring rims

This example rim is stock Toyota, which I bought by mistake, thinking I could use it for wider tires on my Mitsubishi. This wheel has too much backspace, meaning the wider tire would likely rub on my suspension.

Width:

This rim is 7" wide, and is being measured correctly across the bead seat.

The same 7" wide rim, being measured incorrectly.

Backspace:

Place the rim FACE-DOWN, so the mounting surface is showing...

then place a straight-edge, like this jack, across the rim, and measure down to the mounting surface.

a close-up, showing that this rim has 4 5/8" (4.625") backspace.
