The drivers dropped us off at the beginning of this trail. It followed inside one of the lava flow channels, after this water filled crater.
Here is the channel wall. You can see the liquid rock had cooled and plastered the side of the channel.
The volcanic activity resulting from these eruptions caused so much dust in the air that Europe experienced a few severe winters and crop failures.
This turn of events may even have been the impetus for the French Revolution...
The road continued along the rolling lava hills, and looked picturesque against the green moss.
We made a brief stop at this primative outhouse... Ha! Nope, this is the first crater in the 25km lineup. It's small, and still a bit open inside.
This was the view from the parking spot at the first crater. This mountain is to the west, and I think it's named Grettir.
It really looks like a cartoon villian's mountain hide out!
We continued the return trip, and stopped at Fagrifoss, which is an impressive sight! At 80 meters it is one of Iceland's taller falls.
The viewing platform is recent, apparently. As per normal in Iceland, you can easily get into real trouble along these trails!
You can even stand at the top!
This stream is the limiting step in the entire journey. It can get too deep for most vehicles, and explains the 44 inch tires on the van. We got to watch!
