East of Myvatn

Next up was Dettifoss. These are supposed to be big, powerful, and noisy. There is also an upper and a lower falls, with the upper one being smaller.

To get to the river, we had to cross this older river bed. A lot of water was obviously going through here at one time.

Ok, the lower falls! The orange outfits are Parks workers, fixing a pathway. The river has found a crack in the rock, and is slowly cutting its way upstream.

The setting was spectacular, and once again Iceland is very concerned for our safety: wooden pegs and a thin rope!

The mist from the falls came and went, and made planning a picture a bit difficult at times. The people on the other side had to drive a long way on a gravel road.

This was mesmerizing. The dark waters falling so close behind the tourists. I took some videos, too. It is really an unusual sight.

I wanted to get closer to the edge...

So I did! The mist would sometimes blow back to the camera, so I had to keep wiping the lens.

One of those serious mist moments!

We decided to walk upstream on the dry river bed... Apparently, when the upper falls chewed their way upstream, they cut off this channel's water supply.

The upper falls have cut off quite a bit of the water to these side spillways as well. I wanted to get a closer look, where those people ahead were.

And this is what there was! The water was splitting those basalt columns away one by one, and eroding the channel. You can see the columns splitting away!
