East of Myvatn

This small grotto is located close to the pool, and apparently is another "Iceland - Game of Thrones" feature...

It is under this long north-south split in the landscape. The Myvatn area is in the middle of the central geologically spreading section of Iceland.

The entry is just this side-opening crack in the ground. Note the sophisticated safety feature: iron bars and string...

It was worth the visit though! Good thing bathing is banned. Aside from the heat, it is very small.

We travelled a short distance further to the Hverir geothermal area.

Here there were mud pots and bubbling pools of stinky water!

The mud pots were small, but they were enthusiastic!

They were quite accessable, the people in the background are on a different trail.

This doesn't look like much, but each small hole in the ground was hissing, bubbling, and stinky!

The dome is a very powerful steam vent, which made a strong whistling noise. It has been topped with rocks to keep idiots from throwing things into it.
As the wind changed directions, the steam moved around. This boy actually got right up to it, and then the wind suddenly shifted and he got a face full of very hot, and stinky, steam.

The safer way to take a look! This tour group had a very clean-conscious bus driver: wear these blue booties in the muddy stinky sand! However, it's not a very interactive pose...

Now this is an interactive pose! Come walking from out of the steam, very mysteriously! It was quite safe, he was far enough back to avoid the heat. The stink was still a problem!
