The balcony.

Two north facing balconies, which does limit the choices somewhat. I've tried to find the more unusual and exotic plants that do well in these conditions. Dominated by a Japanese Whisteria that I'm training to go across the top of the balcony. The Burgandy Lace Japanese Maple and our spruce Christmas tree share the remaing room with the 3 Lewisia.

The other balcony: The Coral Bark Maple has done quite well for years now, and the bark adds winter colour. The Katsura and Skimmia are more recent, while the spindy rhodo is a wizened veteran now.

I have gone heavily into the Lewisia plants, originally found in Oregon, they do well here. Photogenic, too.

The camelia survived 6 years before a severe winter eliminated it. Unfortunate, as it had beautiful pale pink flowers.

Several rhodos have come and gone, severe winters seem to cause them troubles, though.

This is more like it! Not mine, and located on the corner of Burrard and Davie, this urban garden makes excellent use of the vacant land.
