Kyoto

We continued our exploration of the Ninna-ji grounds and the main temple buildings, and noticed something quite different about the layout of this building. Can you tell what it is?

No? Ok, here's a brief distraction: one of the lavishly decorated shrines.

OK, back to the question. Here it is again: what's different? All of the shrines and temples we visited had carefully planned sight lines, so that as you moved around you would always be presented with a new view of quiet tranquility, usually drawing the eye out and into the distance with no obstruction. This building had view after view of... Diagonals! Look at all the diagonal lines crossing your view in these 2 pictures! You couldn't avoid them. This building was unique.

After the "diagonal" building, we began to explore the vast grounds of mostly closed buildings, including this large gate.
