Several of the homes were open to viewing, with old equipment displays in their upper floors.
This one was focused on the roof construction details.
This one was a smokey mess, and it was hard to breath in here.
Apparently they need to do this regularly to kill the bugs living in the roof thatch, and to discourage any from trying to live in the wall planks.
Unlike the the others, this was not smoky, and was the local shrine facility still occupied by the resident monk.
It also had the smokey fireplace in another part of the building, where you could warm up from the tour of this cold building.
This little gem of truth was the translation under a poster hanging on the wall in the hallway.
The old construction style was good at many things, but rotting frames, supports, and outer wall planks were an issue.
I like how this old water wheel is constructed using only wood!
These fish were being raised in the little diches alongside the buildings.
...another use for all the fresh cold water: selling chilled drinks to the visitors!
Even the walls were worth looking at!
...a reward for all that walking!
